Samantha (Sam) Bernacky remembers well the day she was diagnosed with breast cancer in September, 2009. “First I cried really hard for about ten minutes,” says Bernacky. “And then I told myself it was time to stop that and do something positive.” Now in addition to her Bastrop based company, “Garments to Go”, Bernacky is the co-owner of “Top This”, Austin’s first and only newly-opened beauty, spa and resource center catering to cancer- fighting women and men from across the region.
“There is a real need for a one-stop place where anyone going through cancer treatment can find things like wigs, skin and hair care products and maybe a good massage,” claims Bernacky. “I know there’s nothing like this in Austin, or maybe anywhere else right now.” Top This (www.topthisaustin.com) has a stocked resource room, support groups, and information on everything from personal care to care givers.” Future plans include health and beauty seminars in Austin and resources in Bastrop for assisting women try and buy the perfect wig. p>
With an abundance of energy and an infectious “anything’s possible”attitude, Bernacky’s first career in the fashion industry was as a West Coast based model who appeared in numerous films and commercials. Good looks were an important asset to the fomer Gucci model, and when the ravages of cancer treatments took hold, she fought back with her own plan to feel better by looking better. After six months of chemotherapy, three surgeries and 33 radiation treatments, Bernacky’s cancer is now in remission but her public fight against the disease has only just begun.
Bernacky’s Bastrop business, Garments to Go, a national provider of corporate apparel and uniforms, is currently awash in a sea of pink. Says Bernacky, “October is a month close to our hearts here because we help clients and customers locally and nationwide design custom shirts and items for their cancer fund-raisers. We do tons of tee shirts for big national fundraisers and then for local groups like the Bastrop sheriff’s department. It feels like we’re in all this together.”
Samantha Bernacky is the wife of DVM Bruce Bernacky, who works at MD Anderson in Bastrop. She has a 13 year-old son, Hunter, a Smithville High School student.

Top This! caters to every ones individual needs but they have a unique twist! They are owned and operated by cancer survivors.
The salon was created by Samantha Bernacky, a breast cancer survivor. As she journeyed through her cancer treatments she wanted to be able to have all of her hair care and skin care needs met at one place. Plus Samantha was looking for people who would understand her situation and were able to help with services and products to make her journey easier.
No place was found. So Samantha started talking to Bonnie who had helped her with her wigs. Bonnie a pre-vivor has worked with people with cancer for years. As Samantha met other breast cancer survivors through a support group at the Breast Cancer Resource Center, things started to take shape. She was paired up with Genae Girard, another breast cancer survivor to help her navigate through her upcoming treatments. Genae who has written the book Off The Rack and created the website www.BeyondtheBoobieTrap.com is the Education Coordinator at Top This! Besides the monthly seminars Top This! has a resource room that is dedicated to the latest information on cancer, cancer treatments, publications, support groups and upcoming events.
The business end of the salon is handled by Amy Huff, a breast cancer survivor who met Samantha as they modeled for the Graphic Art Bra Fashion Show this past spring. Amy is the founder of Balance Business Consulting and brings her expertise to Top This! in handling all the accounting requirements.
Customer Relations is handled by Elly Cline, Samantha’s mom and thyroid cancer survivor. Ms. Elly, as she is affectionately called was also a care giver to Samantha when she was battling cancer.
The first hand experience these women have with cancer enables them to help others that are experiencing similar journeys.
The staff at Top This! has the compassion and understanding to meet the needs of their clients with cancer as well as their clients who aren’t experiencing this disease.
